The Mozárabe Way, also known as the Sanabrés Way, is one of the best-known variants and with the greatest historical weight of this path. It connects western Andalusia with Santiago de Compostela, crossing Extremadura from south to north. In this region, from Mérida, its route coincides with the Roman Way of La Plata.
The stage that we describe here is designed for bicycles, due to its length, more than 70 kilometers, starting in Galisteo and arriving at Calzada de Béjar. On foot two stages would be needed, stopping halfway through the route in Aldeanueva del Camino, Baños de Montemayor or even in Hervás.
It is a beautiful stage that crosses an area of ​​pastures at the beginning, especially in the section between Carcaboso and Cáparra. From there the landscape changes as you approach the mountains of the Ambroz Valley, first meadows with cattle, later again leafy pastures before reaching Aldeanueva del Camino.
The route proposed here is the original, if you go by bicycle you can choose to take the variant of the new Vía Verde de la Plata between Aldeanueva del Camino and Hervás, and continue to Baños and Puerto de Béjar, ascending between the mountains under chestnut forests and oaks. If you go on foot it is a few more kilometers, but the slope is gentler and there are no problems with cars.
If you continue along the original route you will have a section parallel to National Highway 630, which today has very little traffic due to the A66 highway that runs parallel to it. When you arrive in Baños de Montemayor you will enjoy crossing its old town, following reproductions of Roman milestones, until you reach a rehabilitated section of the Roman road.
In either of the two options in Puerto de Béjar the path continues with the descent to the Roman bridge of La Malena, and then continues to Calzada de Béjar.
